Beginning Square Root Follow Up As a follow up to her lesson earlier this week, I asked my big to work through some task cards that would expose her to several of the square roots of the squares of 11-25. I've stated many times before that she doesn't like the tediousness of some of the materials...but sometimes you have to work with a thing to understand a thing... She knew the answers to most of these going in, so she worked through one or two to get the hang of it, then skipped the ones she knew. Multiplication Shenanigans The other day, it was the end of the morning. Attention was waning, but it was still too early to pack up for lunch. We'd been talking about checkerboards and multiplication. I asked my little if she'd like to do some checkerboard problems with me. My big told us that her puppy wanted to work on the decimal checkerboard. Somehow this ended up with my little wanting to work on the decimal checkerboard. She's not ready for this yet. I didn't say no...but I did say we needed to chat about a couple of things first. Last summer she saw the HILARIOUS Intro to Fractions lesson, splitting the unit fraction circle into tenths and then hundreds. I repeated this, and introduced the board at the same time. We built a couple of numbers and she declared herself done...but the puppy still wanted to work on the regular checkerboard. We worked through a couple of checkerboard problems. My little picked the numbers and we had a hilarious time pretening to lay out a whole row of 0 products. Square Roots Last week my big and I discussed the square roots of the bead cabinet squares. It's come up informally before, and she knows that the square root is the opposite of the sqaure. We started with the golden beads and a beginning number of 625. We could make a square using 4 hundred squares. We exchanged our remaining 2 hundred squares for 20 tens and began evenly building along the sides of our sqaure. When we had 2 ten bars left, we excanged those for 20 red unit beads (I don't have unit golden beads). We were going to lay that out...but it seemed tedious and my daughter preferred to use a 5 square. I showed her how to read our result across the bottom of the square we'd created, and she checked our work, multiplying 25x25. Because she'd seen me playing with it all weekend, we then immediately repeated the same problem on the square root board. We did have a guide sqaure around, it's a pattern she's been exposed to through other binomial and squaring work, but I didn't explain the reasoning for it yet...that'll be next! I think the sqaure root work is so fun. I really enjoyed working through some problems myself last weekend and I'm excited for the two of us to do this together. Finished Botany Experiment Work The end of our "how do plants absorp water?" experiment. We bought two identical plants. One got water at the roots every other day, the other's leaves were sprayed with water every other day. Originally my little wanted to make a flip book for each plant, and my big chose to write three words per plant per day. My big knew exactly how she wanted to present her final work. I love her design, and that she also chose to list the process. My little didn't get enough days for a flip book - the poor watered-on-the-leaves plant only lasted about 8 days - so she pivoted, sketched final images and will give oral information about her daily sketches. Foundations for the Work of Air Follow Up Last week I presented the Foundations for the Work of Air lessons to my kids, from @_montessorilaboratory and asked them to either choose from suggested follow up work, or come up with their own ideas to change the experiments. My little chose to see which would spin more: a short or a long spiral. Following the original direction, she drew out two different spirals, set up the experiment, and wrote down her predictions. She completed the experiment (including lighting the match herself!), then noted her findings. Her findings show that a long spiral is better! Next, I will encourage her to design her own extension experiment. Celebrating a small victory today: I knocked today's CKLA lesson out of the park. We're using CKLA as our history spine for the Middle Ages in Europe, replacing History Quest. We're finding CKLA more engaging, and more visually stimulating. I adjust a lot. In this lesson we read and discussed content about 1066 - part of "lesson 9". I printed a Bayeux Tapestry coloring page for the kids to color while I read, though my older one was busy using a knitting loom to make gloves. We first heard about The Battle of Hastings and the Bayeux Tapestry at the end of our Viking study, so before we began I defined the vocabulary words in the chapter, and we talked through our prior knowledge. The CKLA text doesn't mention Harald Hardrada by name, nor does it give Harold Godwinson's last name, but we reviewed all the players and I inserted their full names were appropriate. During and after the reading we talked through all the comprehension questions. This is a 4th grade unit, but both kids (1st and 4th) are able to listen, discuss, and come up with great verbal responses. We switched back to some note taking work from "lesson 8." So far, we've read about the lives of lords, serfs, knights, apprentice craftsmen, monks, and nuns. We've already done scaffoded note taking on lords and knights, and written informational paragraphs about both. I had printouts of the sections of text on knights, apprentice craftsmen, monks, and nuns. I modeled going through the text on monks, highlighting specific phrases describing their homes, work, clothing, food, and amount of power. I then modeled paraphrasing the text aloud as we all wrote notes on a graphic organiser. The kids chose one section of text and highlighted the relevant phrases. My older chose nuns, my little chose apprentice craftsmen, and I did knights. Each child then paraphrased their highlighted sections to tell the others how to fill out the organiser. It was great! Foundations for Work of Air Today I gave the kids demonstrations of the first Work or Air experiments. We had a few discussions about the wind on our spring break vacation, so the topic seems timely. This time, I used @_montessorilaboratory_ as my guide, but I presented the demonstrations and lessons to the kids. We began by remembering the three states of matter, talking about air, and where air was found. We talked about how air arrived on Earth and how gravity gives our planet an atmosphere. I then demonstrated the first three experiments listed. We saw air defy gravity, proved that air takes up space, and saw hot air cause items to move. After viewing the three demonstrations, we looked back over the @_montessorilaboratory_ experiment pages. Foundations for Work of Air Today I gave the kids demonstrations of the first Work or Air experiments. We had a few discussions about the wind on our spring break vacation, so the topic seems timely. This time, I used @_montessorilaboratory_ as my guide, but I presented the demonstrations and lessons to the kids. We began by remembering the three states of matter, talking about air, and where air was found. We talked about how air arrived on Earth and how gravity gives our planet an atmosphere. I then demonstrated the first three experiments listed. We saw air defy gravity, proved that air takes up space, and saw hot air cause items to move. After viewing the three demonstrations, we looked back over the @_montessorilaboratory_ experiment pages.
