My Imaginary Island class has been hard at work sculpting their islands. They began by tracing the small sketches of their islands to tape underneath plastic tubs. Then, they used their island outlines and their previously painted physical maps to help them shape a 3-D model of their 2-D plans. It was fun to see the flat images come to life and hear the different details the kids had planned.

Using a guide list of mountain heights, they also picked a height for the highest point of their islands. Next time we meet they'll use their models to create elevation maps of their islands!

We finished up our space race unit last week with a couple of final low key activities. FIrst, we used jello pudding and powdered coconut milk to make astronaut pudding in a bag while we watched Apollo 13. The movie was a big hit - the pudding less so!

We also spent the day at the creek with friends, and did a simple straw rocket stabilization lab before we played. I found this lab free on TpT. The kids all made a closed tube to fit over a straw and ran some test trials to see how it flew. They then added stabilizing fins one at a time and repeated their trials. IMAGINARY CITY - Week 4

This week the kids and I discussed some how some ancient cities dealt with necessary resources - water and garbage. We talked about how hunter-gather groups didn't really need to worry about garbage, and then how some specific ancient cities provided water to their residents and got rid of trash.

The kids then spent the rest of the time building a shaduf. I found two short video clips of shaduf models to show the kids and then they went off to design their own.

@pepperandpine recently posted a video of a beautiful shaduf model that she made with her daughter. We didn't build anything nearly as impressive, but my kids and I did watch her video later in the day and were suitably impressed!

Look at all the fun islands my Imaginary Island kids are making! I bumped island coastline design and painting up a few weeks compared to when my kids did Imaginary Island, which I think will get them thinking about the story of their island sooner. Some of the kids definitely have themes forming - a sports team, a dragon, and a face are a couple of them.

IMAGINARY CITY - Week 3

How are cities organized? Today we discussed different ways decisions might get made in a city. We discussed different types of organization - monarchy, gerontocracy, an original Roman dictatorship (where the dictatorship was expected to last just a short time), and both direct and representative democracy.

We did a little role play - the kids had to decide the best way to share out a bag of candy. I had slips of paper with prompts for each type of government (pulled the parents in to represent the gerontocracy, which amused the kids!) and so each kid or small group of kids got a slip telling them what kind of government they represented, and the first couple of sentences of their speech. They had to decide how they would share out the candy, and complete their speech.

After a little time they took turns giving their speeches. We ended up with a benevolent dictator that divided the candy equally, an oligarchy that did not divide evenly at all. The gerontocracy understood their assignment and didn't distribute any candy at all! In the end, fairness won and the candy was evenly distributed amongst the kids :)

IMAGINARY CITY - Week 2

I'm behind on Imaginary City updates :)

After decided what we each thought a city was in week one, we looked at some specific ancient cities in Week 2. We began by discussing the physical components of a city, the buildings that might be needed to answer the needs of the people who live in those cities.

Moon Art

A few weeks ago I saw a fun art project pop up from @step_art_school I wanted to connect the art a little more to our space race unit study, so I printed out a couple of moon images and topographical moon maps, and we adjusted the art to represent the lunar surface as best we could.

These days, sometimes these activities succeed, and sometimes they flop. This one was a win. We all three enjoyed a calm afternoon taking our time, making art, and talking about moon maps. And the project kept going. For several days my youngest and I kept adding to our glue layer and building up the relief maps. Yesterday we both finished out projects, but my oldest is still going, layering on glue and refining her moon.

Comparison of Exponential Growth

I haven't been finding time to post what we've been doing, but I wanted to post this awesome lesson my little and I worked on today. She's been working on powers and last week I suggested that she make herself some reference charts so that she didn't have to calculate every power every time. She thought this was a great idea and created pages for powers of 2, 3, and 5. She noticed and commented on how quickly the powers of 5 grew compared to the other numbers.

Since I knew it would create a big impression, I wanted to actually show her the exponential growth comparison, so I pulled out my bases mats (which she and I looked at a couple of weeks ago), my Power of 2 Cube, Power of 3 cube, and my base 10 materials.

We first laid out the Power of 2 cube on the mat. Since she had the multiplication statements in her notes, we just labeled the value. After that we laid the Power of 3 pieces in another row. Finally, we laid out the power of 10 values as far as we could, and reminisced about the hierarchical material lesson - which she absolutely remembers - that we probably did 3 or 4 years ago!!

It was SO cool to see the exponential growth. My oldest jumped in and we discussed what the graphs of these growths might look like. I think we need to make the graphs later this week!
