Today one of my students walked into my Cosmic Stories class and immediately said, "ooohh...volcanoes!"

I told the Clock of Eras story. Before I started I asked what the kids remembered from last week's Story of the Earth tale. We talked about what time the kids get up, and what time they go to bed, and then I used those times to compare the 12 hours on the Clock of Eras to their days.

The kids had great comments and questions as we worked around the clock. They loved my bacteria and my trilobite and the pictures.

I think (?) I made the worksheet you see., but probably not the clock graphic it contains I asked my older students to fill it out with a few words or an images or two from each era/eon.

I had some Clock of Era sorting cards from @@montessorikiwi available, the books from Fossilicious.com, and my display available along with paper, books, and coloring/writing materials.

And, of course, I had volcanoes! Baking soda and vinegar volcanoes never get old! Not pictured are the instruction cards I placed out for the kids so that they could complete this activity independently.

This was a really fun lesson, the kids all remembered so much from the last few stories, and it was a great way to see all this new knowledge come together before we move on to the Second Great Lesson.

As a follow up to my last homeschool co-op post:

We are also super lucky to have a homeschool community here that offers classes for our kids to take that can be paid for either out of pocket or with charter school funds. My kids started attending once a week around 2022 or 2023 and have had the opportunity to take classes including: ceramics, public speaking, circus skills, creative writing, film & video, yearbook, math games, middle school science and more.

This year, my youngest takes 5 classes across 2 days, and this is my third year teaching through the organization. I've taught Math/Geometry Art every semester, a year of Imaginary Island, a Game Design class, a Spy Skills class, and this year I am teaching a Geography based classes and a Cosmic stories class along with Math Art.

It is a thriving community, growing each year. I hear there are over 200 kids participating this semester! Running three days a week there are between 12-30 classes running depending on the day - plenty to choose from! The site provides lunch supervision for the kids to hang out, and organizes Halloween events, craft fairs, end of semester performances and graduation experiences. Amazingly, our area can support three sister sites that are smaller, and run only 1 or two days per week. We certainly have plenty of homeschoolers to run into in our area and for us it has been a great place for the kids to make friends, explore new subjects, and get to work and collaborate with other kids.

I've taught Math/Geometry Art every semester, a year of Imaginary Island, a Game Design class, a Spy Skills class, and this year I am teaching a Geography based classes and a Cosmic stories class along with Math Art. It is a thriving community, growing each year. I hear there are over 200 kids participating this semester! Running three days a week there are between 12-30 classes running depending on the day - plenty to choose from! The site provides lunch supervision for the kids to hang out, and organizes Halloween events, craft fairs, end of semester performances and graduation experiences. Amazingly, our area can support three sister sites that are smaller, and run only 1 or two days per week. We certainly have plenty of homeschoolers to run into in our area and for us it has been a great place for the kids to make friends, explore new subjects, and get to work and collaborate with other kids. I-Spy Detective Adjective Triangles!

During the first two weeks of this semesters Math Art class we talked about quadrilaterals. We are now working on an "Exploding Bug" symmetry project, but I'm adding triangles in the background.

Since I'd told the kids the story of the quadrilateral family from The Deep Well of Time by Michael Dorer, and the kids are all upper elementary and middle school age, rather than classify the triangles for them, I gave small groups each one color set of detective adjective triangles and asked them to figure out what properties they could use to classify triangles.

This worked because they are all second plane aged - the reasoning mind - and I primed their thinking by asking them to recall the two properties we used to classify quadrilaterals before we started the activity. When we came back together as a group, one group suggested classifying by sides, another by angles, and we were able to build the 7 Triangles of Reality grid together (not pictured). There was some surprise that there are only 7 types of triangle!

The kids then painted their bugs and backgrounds, which were prepared last week. Exactly half my class is finished painting, and half needs another paint day. We can't complete the project while the paint is wet, so I think I am on the hunt for a quick triangle project to fill next week for the non-painters.

These days, homeschool mornings around here look a lot like this.

My youngest is out of the house 4 mornings a week - a homeschool musical got added to the schedule last minute - and the trade off/deal to make this work is that 8-9am Monday-Thursday is a work hour.

On Mondays we go through her schedule for the week, set up her social studies work for the week and I pass on anything she needs to know/we schedule any lessons needed. Tuesday - Thursday mornings are math before leaving the house, and on Fridays she gets to sleep in and start her work at 9am like we've always done before. 😂 Sometimes afternoon work happens at home, sometimes it happens at the library, and sometimes it happens in other places.

If anything, this season of homeschool is teaching her a lot of independence and time management!

I told the Story of the Early Earth in my Cosmic Stories class today.

I always begin a story by asking what they might remember from previous relevant stories. I have a small group, and so when I started today's story they all asked questions all the way through - so many connections back to earlier stories about metals in the earth, the sinking of heavier materials, the different states of matter, and the rising and sinking of matter due to heat/heat loss.

Once the story was over, work choices involved book (as always!), research, my volcano puzzle, and the option to use model magic to make a model of the Earth - complete with floss-cut-away reveal. So exciting!

During the first week of class, I limited the more hands-on art activity to only two students at a time. Last week, I provided options for all students to complete the hands-on activity at the same time, and this week I returned to only providing enough resources for two students at a time to make the Earth model - I much prefer this limiting! While I have two students engaged in the "most attractive" task, the others begin drawing, reading, or research work. They often break from this work when the hands-on activity becomes available, but are then excited to return to their first project. I saw some wonderful research about volcanoes today, and helped to find answers to questions about plate tectonics. One student did a wonderful drawing of ocean Earth too, but I did not get to snap a picture of that.

They were also super enthralled by my bound book with all the stories in - I wanted something organized and pretty, but it is definitely adding to the drama of the stories!

$I was asked to share a little bit about our homeschool community. We are part of two (or maybe this year three - but the kids all overlap) different co-ops and communities in our area, so today I'll write a little about our first one came to be. My oldest was in elementary school until COVID, and while she was there my youngest took a gymnastics class with a boy who had an older sister at the same school. The other mum and I would chat a bit during gym class, discuss our work, say hi at school pickup & drop off, but that was really about it. Over that 2020 summer I started looking into alternatives to putting my youngest on zoom school for Kinder. I'm teaching a "Cosmic Stories" class to 1st-4th graders in our homeschool community this semester. Over the 14 weeks I will tell the stories for the Montessori five great lessons, interleaved with other stories like stellar neucleosynthesis or a story of time, story of plants - things like that.

So how am I keeping this a little bit Montessori within the constraints of only seeing the kids for an hour or so per week? Well, I love all these stories, and I think that learning through story is memorable. All the stories I am choosing to tell are "seed planters" - nothing should be memorized from the stories, but little sparks and threads should start to weave in the kids brains to provide a base for anything else we do in the class or that they do at home.

After the story I am providing activity choices - always related books to read, always the option to draw a picture about what they heard, and always some questions to research. In addition I will always have at least one other activity: art, a science experience, a hands-on activity, something like that.

The first week, I told the Story of the Coming of the Universe. I forgot to take anything beyond set up photos 😂 All the kids chose to complete an art projects. One chose some matching work, and I think the others all drew/wrote about comets or galaxies.

This week I told the story of Stellar Neucleosynthesis. Everyone chose to follow up with a cut-and-paste activity about the parts of the sun. One student rad through several books, and the others took my element cards and counted through the elements, building the start of the periodic table.

There are many, many stories I could choose to tell. I asked the children if they would like their next story to be about the planets, or about Earth - and so we will be moving on to Earth next week :)

I am back with more Math Art :) This semester my class is "nature inspired" and we kicked of with a project referencing gems and crystal formations.

I have discovered that it is always a good idea to start the semester off with a ruler use project. Drawing a straight line with a ruler seems so simple to grownups, but every semester I meet a kid who hasn't really used a ruler - or doesn't see the point.

For this project I also told the Quadrilateral Family Tree story from Michael Dorer's book The Deep Well of Time. The kids in my class are upper elementary and middle school level so they were able to help me reason through my story and anticipate what might come next in the "family." This project spanned about a class and a half, so we were able to review shapes and concepts at the beginning of the second class.

The project is made with pencil to start, then sharpies and washable markers. We used paint brushes and water to blend the washable marker colors on thicker watercolor paper. Most kids had color down on their papers by the end of the first class, but the water still blended beautifully even after the color sat on the paper for a week. Don't they look great?
