Working together :)

I asked my little if she could expand her writing by adding some sparkly adjectives. (thinking of you, @rsbmjackson) My oldest said "Hey, we have a book you can use for that!" and helped her look up "sparkle" in the thesaurus. Lots of fun discussion about synonyms for sparkly, but not exactly what I meant! 🤣 Regardless, anytime they work together and learn from each other is a win!

We've been working on some persuasive writing at the end of CKLA's 2nd Grade Skills 4 unit. Various persuasive letters have been scaffolded through we-do's, drafts, and revisions, This one is a fun one because she planned, edited, and re-wrote all in one session.

May I always be referred to as M❤️M.

As we move through a couple more checkerboard lessons, I wanted to review place value make sure all the concepts were solidified.

I know in the past I've introduced this concept with free cards from The Learning Ark - but I couldn't find them this time, and actually, because this was a review, it worked out well. I made the first couple of cards and she took over and made the rest, talking about patterns, naming place values and naming patterns in the number of zeroes.

This is usually an early lesson in the checker board sequence, but it was really nice to return to and see how all that learning has come together.

Though I haven't posted much about it, the kids and I have been learning about the Age of Discovery, and the European explorers of the 15-17th centuries. We've also been looking at navigation and the oceans. Last week the kids and I did some experiments to see how water temperature affects density. We made a ton of mess! This week we did a very similar set of experiments, but adding salinity as a second variable. It was fun to see the kids make predictions and guess what would happen.

We also did an experiment to demonstrate what happens when freshwater from a river meets the ocean. Using two waterbottles, one filled with cold fresh water, and one filled with cold blue saltwater, we connected the bottles and laid them on their side. Over time we saw the water equalize between the two bottles with the salt water on the bottom, and the fresh water on top.

For this experiment, I used the Ocean Current Experiment from Forsea.org's Grade 6 lesson plans as a guide.

I particularly liked their demonstration of density. We started with a clear jar filled with glass beads to represent water molecules. I asked the kids what would happen if we added salt to the jar, and the consensus was that the jar would overflow. When we added salt, it fell to the bottom and filled in all the gaps - adding more matter in the same amount of space. Very neat.

Did you catch the @ami_eaa booklet making videos a few months ago? It was a great series of videos showcasing lots of different ways to make little booklets and display items. If you didn't catch them, scroll back through the account and find them, they were back in around October, I think.

It's been a while since we looked at any of the grammar boxes and I want to start moving her through the rest of them. To review what she already knows, I pulled out @modernmontessoriguide's Create Your Own sentences strips and started making a booklet with the first set of cards. Of course she wanted to make a bookelt too, and worked through a few of the cards. This first book will be a good review and then we'll go on from there.

A latitude and longitude lesson for my little one this morning. We used a not very accurate felt map I had (the equator ended up being 2/3 way down the map!), but we made it work, and had our globe to refer to as well.

We've been talking a lot about ocean navigation and the explorers of the 15-17th centuries, so giving a lesson on those terms made sense. I used lessons in my Montessori R&D Geography manual, but actually combined the latitude lesson and longitude lesson into one.

I would have invited my oldest to the lesson too, but she completed the follow up work for this lesson last week, after finding it on our shelves! I printed some free task cards from TpT and provided and atlas with appropriate map bookmarked. Also printed and on our shelf right now is a code breaking lat/long activity. I'm pretty sure she already did one of those riddles too!

The biggest point of interest for both kids (my older one joined in halfway through) was looking at the wiggles of the international date line and comparing it to the straight prime meridian line of the other side of the globe.

I made these pythagoras plates a while ago, but don't have enough space to always have them on display. I got them out to play with the other day, and of course both girls ended up exploring the plates too.

My oldest had requested a geometry art project of her own, so I presented the Spiral of Theodorus to her, along with a new tool - the set square. We drew our spirals and listed the lengths of the sides. She's worked with the Pythagorean Theorem before, so this was a fun review. I showed her some follow up art from https://modelsofexcellence.eleducation.org so we'll see if she's inspired to create something from her spiral.

The Pythagoras Plates are part of my Equivalence Plates bundle, available on my website, Etsy, and TpT. See the links in my bio or stories. SVG cut files for Cricut and printable versions are available.

The Story of Maps

If you search for the 'Open Door Press' store on TpT, you'll find a free Story of Maps lesson, with extension activity. And if you scroll down to the comments, you'll find that someone's created and linked to a Google Doc with all the images mentioned in the lesson.

This was the perfect lesson to start integrating some Montessori geography with our Age of Discovery work.

I presented the lesson after lunch, as scheduled with my oldest, but the kids didn't want to sit and look at my computer. My little suggested putting the images on the tv so that they could move around during the story...so we tried it. I projected the images from my computer to the tv, and read the story on my phone. They were both up and down looking at and discussing the pictures. How very technological of us! ;)

After the story my little wanted to do the extension activity, drawing the continents on an orange and peeling to form a flat map :)
