A little sentence level work today, looking again at the four types of sentence, this time based in U. S, Government content. She's reviewing content we've talked about, and different sentence structures. I have a few different Montessori/Writing Revolution style works available on our shelf right now. She's had lessons in all of them with different content, and is now able to select these independently, and work within content we're currently studying.

Last time these were on our shelves the content also provided a place to find facts for game questions and notes for writing work.

A little fact & strategy work for my little today. She's working on quick recall of multiplying larger numbers by five. We've looked at this work with the stamp game, but it wasn't really the right approach.

Instead, I noticed that we could attack this in a different way - she knows her 5 times table, and she knows what any 10 or 100 multiplied by 5 is. So, we can start with adjacent facts.

I prepared fact strips for 5x10 through 5x100, she filled these in no problem. I also prepared slips for 5x1 and 5x2 and placed those (in place value order) in columns.

I then gave her a fact slip I knew she knew: 5x11. She answered 55 and I asked her how she knew. She hadn't quite put the pieces together, so I gave her another slip: 61x5. This time I saw her referring to the reference columns as she made her answer. I asked her what she'd done and we pulled the reference slips to cement the strategy. We repeated this with another few two digit numbers ending in 1. Then we moved on to two digit numbers ending in 2, like 42X5. This time is was simple to see that she knew 40x5 and she knew 2x5 and could just add the two together.

After getting her to explain what was going on in works, I then moved onto prepared strips with two digit numbers ending in a 9, then ones ending in an 8. This time she can find the base fact and take either 5 or 10 away to get her answer.

A quick, but important lesson - she needed explicit instruction in this, but has internalized it quickly. We've been firing equations with a two digit number ending in either 1, 2, 8, or 9 multiplied by 5 back and forth all day and she's instantly so much faster at this!

The Case for Repeating Work

Over the summer my kids both made games featuring facts about the American Revolution. As part of our US Government unit, my little has again started making a game. And probably a pretty similar game at that.

Why is repeating this task important? Firstly, she's still doing a lot of research, reading non-fiction sources and finding our facts about the structure of government. And the information is sticking. Today she was watching a Disney Channel show - they were teaching a Canadian kid about the US Government and she told me she already knew all the information they discussed.

Secondly, she's got new ideas - and look at the difference between her two game boards. Her presentation is entirely different this time, the rules she's written up are much easier to understand, and she's being much more creative with her booby trap cards and spaces.

The first image is the beginning of the new game, second image is the old game for reference.

We spent some time the other day learning about our rights, as given by the Bill of Rights.

TheCleverTeacher.com has a free printable worksheet and a set of scenarios relating each of the first 10 amendments to a real life scenario.

We first read through the actual text of the Bill of Rights, and decided which of @thecleverteacher's images matched the scenario. When we were all sure that we understood the rights each amendment gives, we moved on to reading through her scenarios. The girls were able to identify how each scenario was or wasn't protected by a Constitutional Right.

After these scenarios, we moved on to iCivics.com. We played a really engaging game pretending to run a new law firm. As clients game in we had to decide which constitutional right was being violated (or if no right was being violated), and then direct the client to a lawyer specializing in the correct area. The game is actually very fast paced, gets really hectic, and is a lot of fun. We all highly recommend it.

Towards the end of the summer my little and I started exploring positive and negative integers. Each time she had a lesson she'd ask, "Is this the race car one?" It wasn't, and I promised we'd do it very soon.

Then we took a break and never got to it - but today, it was time! She must remember her big sister having the lesson.

"The Race Car Lesson" is Montessori R&D's lesson to introduce addition and subtraction of positive and negative numbers. The set up is very clear and simple, and I wrote up a little rule card for her to follow. I had a few prepared equation tickets and we "drove" the car through them.

After a couple of strips we began alternating making up strips for each other and "driving the car" through to find the result.

I've curled the number line up on our shelf with the rules card, a few equation strips, and a lot of blanks strips so that she can continue this work.

First big math lesson of the year for my little. She has it in her head that she doesn't want to work on fractions - so we've been reviewing operations and place value through decimals.

However...she's also been asking questions and noticing things about decimals and percents, so I thought I'd throw something out and see what happened...

I brought out the fractions box, but also the centisimal frame and told her I wasn't going to give a fractions lesson. And then I put the half piece in the centisimal frame. I wrote tickets for the fraction, the percent, and the decimal and she followed right along. She picked the 1/10 piece for her turn and had no problems coming up with the percent and decimal values.

We continued alternating until she asked if she could use more than one piece (of course! - I expected her to pick two of the SAME fraction piece but she picked 1/2 and 1/3. We didn't know what fraction that was, but she quite happily pulled out some of the other fraction pieces until she came up with 5/6 as the equivalent fraction.

A little while later she got a kick out of pulling out the whole fraction piece and writing those tickets. Later on 2/2 and 3/3 showed up in her selections. Also during the process somewhere, "This is fun, I'm going to do this again!" may have been uttered. But we absolutely, most certainly, did NOT have any sort of fraction lesson whatsoever.

Man, these upper elementary presentations get less and less photogenic! Both kids had topics come up in their supplemental math program that they've covered before with Montessori lessons - but when I asked them if they remembered the lesson, they both said no, but were open to hearing the stories - if I was quick.

So, kid 1 got a very quick and scrappy lesson on the quadrilateral family - though we did add a new element: drawing the different lessons on isometric paper. The lesson starts with an irregular quadrilateral and moves through two different paths. On one path the quadrilaterals get more and more parallel lines. On the other path they get more and more equal adjacent sides. There's some crossover, but both paths ultimately end with a square, the most perfect of the quadrilaterals. Michael Dorer has a great story for a first presentation of this lesson in his book The Deep Well of Time.

Kid 2 got a quick review of the relationship between the radius and circumference of a circle. We used our DIY geometric cabinet puzzle so show that as we add more sides to a polygon we can better approximate the circumference of a circle. Then, we rolled a plate along a piece of string and re-discovered that 3 and a little bit more plate diameters match the circumference of the circle. She also read a brief article from the Exploratorium on the history of pi. (https://www.exploratorium.edu/pi/history-of-pi)

Fun lessons, but not a pretty as the first time around!

Imaginary Island, Week 2

We continued to look at land/water forms this week. Beginning with a review of the 10 basic forms covered last week, we then looked at about 12 more. Once again I blew up the picture cards from The Modern Montessori Guide to 150% so that everyone could see and we talked about places the kids might have been, and some of the land forms they'd seen.

I had available all the Pin It Maps land and water form control maps, a couple of atlases, and a couple of other books about geography. Paired with those, every kid had a flip book from http://gingersnapstreatsforteachers.blogspot.com. Based on the age/ability of the kids they colored the flip book, referred to the land form cards laid out on the floor to add extra landforms to their book, wrote definitions of the landforms and/or examples of the landform on the back of the flipbook page.

We didn't quite get the flip books finished in the time we had, so they all took them home to hopefully complete.
