Earlier this week my little and I reviewed types of angles with our geometry stick box. Since this is at least her second pass with this lesson we moved quite quickly.

We made our own angle measurer from a circle of paper - folding in half, and in half again. She immediately make a connection with the quarter fraction pieces. Early in our triangle study she had asked about measuring angles, so we added protractor use into the lesson and clearly defined parameters for each type of angle.

My oldest joined us after the lesson to record the lesson and create some triangle art for future work.

We were out and about later in the day and I could tell that the lesson was buzzing around in her head. She made comments connections between the frames on her graphic novel pages and picked out different angles in shapes she saw. I love seeing the kids make their own sense of our work and seeing the whole learning journey take place.

What relationships can we find between the three sides of a triangle?

Last week at the park I asked my kids if they noticed anything about the sides of the triangles were making. Today we explored that a little bit further.

Using strips of cardstock, rulers, pencils, and scissors we measured and labeled three lengths on each strip. There were no constraints on the lengths other than that they needed to fit on the strip. We each made 5 or 6 strips.

The kids read the lengths on each strip to me and I recorded them, ordering the three lengths from shortest to longest. We looked at the first half of the group and the kids predicted if those strips would make triangles.

Some of the strips wouldn't make a triangle!

We looked at the side lengths and started playing with numbers. We noticed that if we added the two shortest lengths together and compared to the longest length, we could determine whether a triangle could be made or not!

The kids then predicted and tested the second group of strips and we recorded our data.

Both kids are comfortable with the language of triangle side lengths, so we each created a definition page. I introduced the notation of tick marks on triangle sides to my youngest, and reviewed with my oldest.

Today's geometry work started with a review of triangle nomenclature. I used blue tape to create two big triangles on the floor and each kid added labels to one triangle each. Angle, side, and vertex language was review for both kids. We discussed the apex and base of triangles, then I introduced interior versus exterior heights.

Next we spent some time playing with nesting triangles, inspired by @beauty_of_play. I LOVE the spiral made by the yellow triangle set! My yellow set has side lengths that grow by 2cm each time while the blue set has side lengths that double each time. We all played to see what patterns we could come up with and practiced sketching them. Once we were satisfied we created our own final interpretations.

___________________________________ #homeschool #montessori #diymontessori #homeschoolmontessori #montessoriathome #montessorihomeschooler #homeschooler #unitstudies #geometry #geometryunitstudy #waldorfgeometry #triangles #artinmath #mathart #mathsart #mathsarts #homeschoolgeometry #homeschoolmath #artinmaths

Last week we made double chocolate pecan cookies to go along with our Vanderbeeker's novel unit from @lithouselearning. When we finish those we'll be making thumbprint cookies (they were in the book yesterday)! Yum!

I pre-printed a couple of recipes with some fraction work in mind for my little. Since the girls will each use a different recipe they only need to bake half batches. My little and I pulled out our fraction circles for a little fraction equivalency and division work.

She pulled out the fraction pieces to match what was listed in the recipe, we exchanged for two equivalent fractions and halved. She's all ready to bake in a day or two!

Have you heard about Agents of Discovery? We played with it for the first time yesterday. @agentsofdiscovery is a tool our local county parks department used to make in-park scavenger hunts.

Our group of 7 kids had a great time running around the park, answering trivia questions and playing a couple of augmented reality challenge games. It was a nice bridge between the work we did in the morning, and 2+ hours of water play afterwards.

It seems like this is a tool used by parks departments, but also other places like zoos and museums. We certainly plan to check out the other scavenger hunts located in some of our other local parks.

Go ahead and call us California snowflakes - it's the end of May and it's the first time this spring that we've taken our work outside! It's been a strange spring.

Anyway, we had a fantastic day starting our geometry unit. I'm pulling inspiration from both Waldorf and Montessori theories.

Waldorf curriculum starts with circle work, but my kids both wanted triangles work - so I drew a chalk circle on the ground as we just covered a "walking the circle" activity to define our viewpoint as we travel the circle and start thinking about tangents. We then took this into a "walking the triangle activity."

Next the three of us each placed one leg inside a giant loop of elastic and explored different triangles inscribed in circles. I planted a couple of question seeds: can all triangles be inscribed in a circle? do you have any thoughts about how the lengths of two sides of the triangle might relate to the third side? We'll come back to these thoughts later.

We all sat down and practiced sketching different triangles inscribed in circles. Once we had a collection, and were happy with our sketches, we drew/painted a final picture.

It was a beautiful day :)

We're back from vacation and starting one last unit before the end of the year. We're definitely going to be working on a "light" schedule - our homeschool science and enrichment classes have finished for the year, and soccer season is over, so we're going to spend more time outside, on outings, and work on a much slower pace.

This morning we started The Vanderbeeker's of 141st Street, and the accompanying novel studies from @lithouselearning. My youngest is using the Level 1 book, and my oldest is using the Level 2 book, with a few Level 1 pages thrown in. The novel studies pair exercises based on The Writing Revolution with content from the novel.

However before we started, we baked double-chocolate-pecan cookies. These cookies feature quite a few times in the novel. To add a fun element I gave each kid a different recipe for a very low-key "Bake Off" style challenge. My oldest is now very independent in the cookie baking kitchen and decided to substitute slivered almonds for the pecans in her recipe. I was surprised at just how independent my little one was - even taking hot trays out of the oven!

We made the cookies, read chapter 1 of the book while they baked, talked about the characters in the novel while the cookies cooled, I read chapter 2 while they ate cookies, then I got to eat my cookies while they did their sentence work :) Both recipes are delicious!

A fun start to the novel - we'll be doing more baking along with this book!
