My oldest might not be homeschooling anymore, but she helped my little and I pick out our WWII novel study.

On the short list:
Impossible Escape by Steve Sheinkin
The Songbird & the Rambutan Tree by Lucille Abendanon
The Daughter of Auschwitz by Tova Friedman
Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz

My oldest and I have read all of these, and they are all based on true accounts of the war - plus similar fiction books like Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, Uprooted by Lynne Reid Banks, Our Castle By the Sea by Lucy Strange.

Together all three of us have read Goodnight Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian and A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus so we decided against any more evacuation books, and on a book that focused on concentration camps.

My youngest was given quick summaries of each of the 4 shortlist books, and picked Impossible Escape. I coudn't find a non-AI generated novel study, so I re-skimmed the book and came up with one question for her to answer per chapter - this is a topic we will cover in our WWII unit in a couple of weeks also.

I'm actually really glad that she picked this book. As I was skimming it for questions, I remembered that the author flips back and forth between the story of Rudi and also giving historical details about what was going on with the war and German policies at the time. It is not a pleasant book - nor is it meant to be - but both the non-fiction story and the historical context are presented in a really engaging way. I remember this book being difficult to put down when I first read it. I tried to take pictures of both the biography/story parts of the book, and the factual history parts of the book.

My Citizens of the World class has been working hard all semester. Each student has become an expert on one specific country. We're about halfway through the semester now, and so we've spent the last couple of weeks working on some summary projects.

First, the kids have been making an infographic that summarizes everything they know about their countries - the physical geography, climate, natural resource, economic geography, and how people in the country answer their fundamental needs - and then a takeaway sentence describing how geography has shaped that country.

I also asked them to choose one well-known item from their country that answers a fundamental need, and then explain why/how that connects to the geography of their country.

We had a great "gallery" at the beginning of our last class. The kids made some really great connections. I loved seeing how the kids interpreted the assignments.

Check out our beautiful finished concentric circle work! I took in silhouette images of various water and air creatures - dragons proved popular! I also love that some of the kids added spooky trees and bats and Halloween pumpkins.

Before we painted we reviewed all our circle terminology so far. This was the semester's first project using a compass so I kept everything else pretty simple.

Remember our last "exploding bug" project? One of the girls in the class told me that she'd tried to show her 5 year old sister how to do the project. She said it went ok. I love that she was so inspired to teach the project at home!

My class chose "animals" for their second Timeline of Life follow up story. I ended up telling a story that followed the vertebrate line. Actually I really I told a story about the vertebrate egg - the early tactics of fish to release thousands of embryos into the water, the adaptation of amphibian eggs to include a little material to surround the growing embryo, the huge change to a shelled egg in reptiles, that adaptation into a more protective shell for birds, and finally the adaption of mammals to protect their young by letting the eggs develop inside their bodies.

Along the way I mentioned the characteristics of each branch of the vertebrate family.

We followed up with research books and questions, vetebrate "who am I?" stories from Montessori Print Shop, and a blackline cut/paste vertebrate type sorting activity, also from Montessori Print Shop. Everyone beelined for the sorting activity so while the kids were cutting and sorting we had a lot of good discussion about all the different characteristics of the different types of vertebrates.

Once the cutting and pasting was done, the group was pretty evenly split between kids who wanted to go through the sets of animals stories, and those who wanted to look at the books and choose a question to answer.

I am only teaching two or three follow up stories to the Second Great Lesson in my Cosmic Stories class - I meant to give the kids a choice between fungi and bacteria, but I forgot to ask the class as a whole. I did remember to ask one of the class members later in the day, and she chose bacteria, so a story about prokaryotes, archaea, and bacteria was our first follow up story.

We had a great discussion about simple cells, more complex cells, the things those complex cells evolved into, and where those cells can still be found today. Using a chart from @minkybubsmontessori we explored some different classifications of archaea and bacteria, and saw what they looked like.

We also ended up just having quite a lot of discussion about the timeline of life in general (mine is from Rhyme and Reason Academy).

After our discussions finished, the kids had the opportunity to craft a prokaryote based on some printed diagrams, work with the previously mentioned chart from minkybubs, or - as always - explore some books, respond to research questions and draw something related to prokaryotes. I am enjoying seeing enjoy the opportunity to interact with the books and choose their own topic to find out about!

I did remember to ask the kids if they preferred that the next story be about plants or animals (I intentionally didn't want the two stories to be plants and animals), and so we'll be hearing about animals next week!

I haven't posted much about the third class I'm teaching in our homeschool community - I'm calling it Citizens of the World.

I'm actually super excited about it because this isn't a unit study or an interpretation of something, but something I completely designed from scratch.

Over about 7 weeks, students will become an expert on one country (which they picked). We're about 5 weeks in, and so far they've examined the physical geography, the climate, the population distributions and the economy/natural resources of their country.

They've made a base map on paper, and are creating overlay maps on tracing paper so they can see that different maps give different information, but that ill that information is related.

Last week they were given some information about the natural resources, imports and exports or their country - and researched a few more. We then held a "Global Trade Summit" where they had 10 trading points, and had to figure out the most efficient countries to trade with to get everything their country needs - it was great fun!

While they may not know this, all these topics weave together within a Montessori style framework - showing that everything is related. Next up are the fundamental human needs of their country. After that our course pivots...I'll explain more later :)

Have you seen this pop up in your homeschool groups? Civic Quest is a FREE game from the National Constitution Center. It is a learning/escape room style game that is designed to get kids thinking about a discussing the people and issues that led up to the US War for Independence. You can sign up for the wait list here: https://constitutioncenter.org/civic-quest Our game arrived last week, my little and I played over the weekend. It is a beautiful game, beautifully put together, packaged, included primary source type documents, and has lots of cute gimmicks to keep you playing. Since it's an escape room style game, I can't see us playing it again, but we certainly pass on to friends so that they can play too. We enjoyed it, it got us talking about some of the famous names and issues involved, and it really didn't state any hard political position, but left open a lot of space for discussion. The best lessons are the ones where you forget to do any recording, right?

I generally don't take photos during my classes, but I have been trying to remember to take set up photos!

I gave the Second Great Lesson/Timeline of Life lesson to my Cosmic Stories class last week. I have the Rhyme and Reason Academy timeline (what is her handle? I couldn't find it!) and I used quite a lot of pieces from her Second Great Lesson script (it's non YouTube), which she rewrote using information from Big Picture Science/Priscilla Spears @bigpicturescience

The kids enjoyed my additions of my felt prokaryote, and my fossilized Trixie the trilobite. We spent some time afterwards following the different lines and picking out organisms that they recognized.

Follow up work options included books (always), coloring pages from fossilicious.com, along with my fossilicious fossils and magnifying glasses, their fact books and research guides.

I also had "fossil making" set up - the kids could press a shell into clay, then mix and pour on plaster of Paris to make an impression fossil.

They would like bacteria/archaea to be our next follow up lesson...any fun craft follow up ideas for me?
