Today my Mathematical Art class created tocapu patterns. Never heard of them? They are square-based geometric designs dating back to pre-Inca Andean civilizations. Just like quipu, there is speculation that these designs may convey language, but at the moment no one really knows.

Since it's almost the end of the semester, this is a collaborative project for my class. After some history I distributed sample designs. We used rulers to measure and divide up post-it notes and copy or create similar geometric designs. After creating a few of these we stuck the post-it notes to sticky back craft foam and used the post-it as a template to cut corresponding foam shapes.

The foam shape were stuck on multiple cardboard squares - each square representing one intended color in the final design - I think this is clearer in the photos! Next week we'll each make one more design and then share them to use as stamps with ink pads to create art inspired by The Royal Inca Tunic (pic included).

We finished our Moroccan tile inspired art works and they look amazing! I had a few different mediums for the kids to use. Most chose oil pastels for a really vibrant look, but a couple used chalk and I think water color pencils too.

After coloring, the kids removed the tape we'd used to mask the paper. All but one chose to paint over the masked lines in gold paint, and I love both the sparkly gold pop, and the white borders on the all pale blue design.

These designs gave the kids so many options to practice the straightedge and compass constructions we've been working on, but also gave so much room for creativity. They're so beautiful!

My Mathematical Art class is aimed at older elementary and middle school students. While I teach and use geometric vocabulary, the class is also an art class and I want to emphasize that we can create all this artwork with just a ruler and compass.

I've been creating reference sheets for my Mathematical Art students - most sheets I found were aimed at high school geometry students and just included too much information (angles names, rays names, measurements, etc.).

Would these sheets be useful to others if I put them up in my store? There's a couple more beyond the ones pictured here, and maybe there'll be one or two more before the end of the semester.

Guess I never shared this one - I chose Rose Windows as another of our Math Art: Around the World projects. After learning a little about the history, and seeing some examples of cathedral windows throughout Europe we got to work.

In this lesson the skill taught was bisecting an angle - and in dividing our circles into 12 divisions, we got plenty of practice. Everyone practiced angle bisecting, but I did have some pre-printed templates for kids who struggled with accuracy.

Once we got our circles drawn and divided, we lay transparencies (think overhead projector!!) over the top and used black glue as our "stone work." When the glue had dried we used colored sharpies to color in the designs. Beautiful!!

Guess I never shared this one - I chose Rose Windows as another of our Math Art: Around the World projects. After learning a little about the history, and seeing some examples of cathedral windows throughout Europe we got to work.

In this lesson the skill taught was bisecting an angle - and in dividing our circles into 12 divisions, we got plenty of practice. Everyone practiced angle bisecting, but I did have some pre-printed templates for kids who struggled with accuracy.

I was thrilled to present Moroccan tiles and Islamic geometric art to the kids today. Today was all about prep work. I gave my "middle schoolers" a more complex option, my "upper el" kids a simpler option they could do independently, and then worked with a couple of younger students to make sure everyone is ready for next week.

Everyone started out by drawing a circle and dividing the circumference into 6. We inscribed the circle in a square, then split and went from there.

How cool do these look? I can't wait to see them completed!

We've hit a very fun milestone in our house: two library visits ago my youngest asked my oldest for book recommendations....and my oldest was happy to oblige! Last visit the same thing happened.

I remember, when she was in 5th grade, my oldest was at a bit of a loss as to which books to pick. She was ready for the next notch up. I remember looking at library shelves with my oldest at about this age and she was at a bit of a loss as to what to pick next. How cool that my youngest has a big sister to recommend great books!

Also, they're both passing the books they like to me too. Super fun to all be passing the same books around.

Picture 2 is this week's stack of book recommendations from my oldest to my youngest.

Homeschool Mathematical Art

My homeschool group finished our third Mathematical Art project of the semester :)

Following on from our West African Mudcloth work, which focused on ruler use and symmetry, we've spent the last two weeks learning about and creating art inspired by Navajo weaving. Many Navajo rug designs are strongly geometric and have both vertical and horizontal reflective symmetry. Practicing our measuring skills, we divided grid paper into four quarters. The students then followed a guide/my instructions to create a design in one quadrant of the paper, the "fundamental area." This design was then traced on tracing paper.

This week the students again used their measuring skills to divide art paper into 4 quadrants. Using the design drawn on only one quadrant of the tracing paper they flipped and rotated the tracing paper to transfer their design to all four quadrants before coloring. You can get an idea of the process in the pictures.

They then had a choice of a few different art materials for decoration, and made some beautiful images :)

oMy homeschool kids had a wonderful time deciphering clues and trying to weed out "The Mole in the Coastal Office." With only an hour, our time was tight. The kids worked in pairs rotating through stations around the room and we had to share a few clues at the end. However, they were successful - the mole was discovered!

When we got home, my oldest (who takes another class at the time) commandeered my supplies and also solved the case :)

I'm going to be uploading "A Mole in the Coastal Office" to my website and TpT. It is a great extension to my Secrets of Spying Unit Study - specifically the Steganography information packet.
