So much silliness with one- and two- stage rockets!

Is there anything more fun that the silly noises balloons make? We played with one and two stage balloon rockets today, and this was our best two-stage rocket attempt. We strung yarm all the way from our living room fan, through the dining room to our kitchen door. Unfortunately I was the only one tall enought to reach the string height to launch the rocket.

We actually got the single balloon rockets to travel further - all the way into the kitchen! - but we could clearly see how a two-stage rocket works, using up the thrust from the first stage and then seeing it fall away to allow the second stage to propel the rocket forward.

We predict that this would work better with the long balloons so I'm going to see if I have time to pick some of those up this weekend.

We made some pretty mandala art in my geometry class this week, using only a ruler and straight edge. I've done this project before with my own kids, but we used a protractor to measure our angles.

My class is seeming to really enjoy compass work, so I pushed our protractor work back a week and moved this up. We began by learning how to bisect a line and an angle, then used those skills to lay out our concentric circle guide. We briefly discussed the history of mandala art and looked at examples from around the world before getting to work decorating our own.

An hour is not a lot of time to work in a skill and creating art, but everyone just about finished. I managed to grab shots of a few of the kid's work.

I mentioned that my little has insisted that she wants to do Beast Academy for the math this year. We started with a unit on multiplication, since she's pretty strong in it and so she can concentrate on learning BA's style while practicing concepts she knows.

She's done some great distributive property review, and work with standard algorithm. Beast Academy also includes the 'area model' of multiplication, but before she tackled that, I wanted to make sure that we related it to the checkerboard. She made the connection right away :)

(Also, I love the checkerboard and I'm really at the point where we're just never going to use it again, so I took any excuse to get it out one more time!)

Imaginary City - Week 1

We had a great first day of this years project - Imaginary City! We began by remembering that last year's Imaginary Island project, thinking about how we decided how our islands were formed, determined the location and climate, put life on our islands, wrote about how humans came to their island, and began examine cultural components.

This year, we'll be designing Imaginary Cities, examining how people interact and live together, and how cities solve problems. Like my fancy binder cover? I'm starting out very organized this year :)

We started out by looking at the Timeline of Humans, and talked through characteristics of Paleolithic and Neolithic humans. Then thought about how and why humans started to settle down into communities and looked at early city locations on a world map.

Next, we brainstormed what components might be found in Ancient Cities and Modern Cities. What do you know...everything they came up with was found in both cities!! They came up with a great list! These kids have some great background knowledge already. I also pulled out and we reviewed the Fundamental Needs of Humans chart.

Then, I gave the kids artist images of 3 early cities: Dholavira, Babylon, and Cahokia. The kids wrote lists of the similarities and differences between the cities. Once again, they found far more similarities than differences.

Based on the notes we made, everyone then wrote down and answer to the prompt, "What is a city?" We'll share them and look at a formal definition next week!

Caught these two working together today :) I ordered a Newton's Laws kit with our charter school funds, and the kids got stuck in.

We watched a short video on Newton's First Law and recalled a local science show we've attended multiple times where Newton's first law is often demonstrated with a basketball and a wagon.

The divided up tasks and build a wheeled base with a mostly free-moving carriage. Following a series of experiments that were detailed in the booklet that came with the kit we saw the first law working in several different ways.

They also worked together later in the morning, sorting and laying out a timeline of space travel as an overview activity for our current space race unit study. These cards are from Sunrise Science's TpT store and have a lot of information and a picture packed on to each card.

Caught these two working together today :) I ordered a Newton's Laws kit with our charter school funds, and the kids got stuck in.

We watched a short video on Newton's First Law and recalled a local science show we've attended multiple times where Newton's first law is often demonstrated with a basketball and a wagon.

The divided up tasks and build a wheeled base with a mostly free-moving carriage. Following a series of experiments that were detailed in the booklet that came with the kit we saw the first law working in several different ways.

They also worked together later in the morning, sorting and laying out a timeline of space travel as an overview activity for our current space race unit study. These cards are from Sunrise Science's TpT store and have a lot of information and a picture packed on to each card.

Back to school, and starting with big work!

I gave the kids the option of going "back to school" on Friday and taking Monday off, or starting our work on Labor Day. They chose to start on Friday :)

We decided to start with some language lessons. My little and I discussed idioms and came up with several different examples. She immediately wanted to get started making a big poster on some huge paper I have. So we started with a little math, dividing the page into quadrants :)

My oldest is going to start reading Animal Farm so she started with a lesson on allegory. We began by reading The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss and discussing the deeper meaning behind the seemingly simple story. My little jumped in on the beginning of this lesson with us because I just finished reading The Chronicles of Narnia to us and so we discussed how the whole series is an allegory. We also watched a couple of videos explaining the terms allegory and satire.

I'm using Fishtank's 8th Grade Animal Farm unit as my guide. The first half of the unit discusses Stalin and the Russian Revolution. My oldest has a little bit of background knowledge here already from her Cold War work over the summer, so we'll being that information in separately and are jumping into the unit around lesson 9.

Yesterday was my first day teaching classes in our local homeschool community. I decided to start my Imaginary Island class with all the impressive impressionistic demonstrations! (When I did this last year with my kids we did this lesson somewhere around week 5)

Last year, I also set up these demonstrations and totally forgot to take pictures - yesterday I got some great ones! These kids are all 3rd-7th grade, so I had them participate in the demonstrations from the get-go and a few brought enough background knowledge to be able to guess what the demonstration represented before they saw it.

Here's what you see:
1. Clay and water representing a continent
2. Rising water levels (ice melt) causing sea level rise and a continental island
3. Set up for a sedimentary island
4. Sediment moving into a sedimentary island
5. Oobleck (cornstarch/water mixture that has settled a little)
6. Heated oobleck mixture, representing volcanic activity under the ocean leading to volcanic islands.
7. A baking soda volcano in an empty tray
8. Rocks added around the volcano to represent coral. Volcano eroded away by "rain" and "wind" to create coral atoll islands.
9. Sand being poured into water to represent artificial islands.

Pretty sure leading with this lesson left a big impression :)

Yesterday was my first day teaching classes in our local homeschool community. I decided to start my Imaginary Island class with all the impressive impressionistic demonstrations! (When I did this last year with my kids we did this lesson somewhere around week 5)

Last year, I also set up these demonstrations and totally forgot to take pictures - yesterday I got some great ones! These kids are all 3rd-7th grade, so I had them participate in the demonstrations from the get-go and a few brought enough background knowledge to be able to guess what the demonstration represented before they saw it.

Here's what you see:
1. Clay and water representing a continent
2. Rising water levels (ice melt) causing sea level rise and a continental island
3. Set up for a sedimentary island
