Check out these ancient city models! Using everything we've talked about so far, the kids planned and then modeled ancient cities that incorporated all the components we decided were important. They've worked on them together and also at home, and today they presented their work to each other. Each child talked about how the citizens of their city would get water, be defended, source food. They also showed off their public gathering spaces, commercial spaces, government spaces and more.

They all presented to each other clearly. They knew their stuff and were confident speaking to the group. I really enjoyed seeing how each child came up with their own unique touches and ways to meet the needs of their citizens, but also how some of the same ideas were mirrored across cities - just like in real life!

I put together a grid of activity options for my little as part of our Greek Mythology work. These are a guide, and a way for her to integrate her learning across different content areas. She's also free to come up with her own ideas. She's chosen a few to do over the last month or so, but my favorite was one she picked herself:

We first did Greek myths when she her reading was just taking off. I ordered a few Easy Reader versions of Greek myths. On a whim, I added the books to our bookcase display this go around - they are well below her reading level now, but she immediately seized upon the books and exclaimed that she remembered them and loved them!

She quickly decided that she wanted to re-write the myth of Odysseus meeting Polyphemus the cyclops. However, she wanted to take the Easy Reader book and re-write it as a letter from Odysseus home to his wife, Penelope. She wrote a great letter with way more detail than was included in the Easy Reader book, but it was a great way to jog a memory and encourage a creative project for her.

My little requested some Greek mythology work and we've been having a great time revisiting all these stories. We made our first pass at Ancient Greek myths back in 2020 when my little was just a Kindergartener and my oldest was in 3rd grade. Through the Greeking Out podcast and Goddess Girl books - and later Percy Jackson - they're all favorite stories and we know a lot of them well. So - I needed to scale up from our first time around! My youngest is reading versions of the myths in a Nomad Press Greek Myths book, and I'm reading aloud the Greeking Out! books. It just so happens that her IEW writing curriculum is currently focused on re-telling Greek myths. She's able to compare 2-3 different versions of each myth as she writes about it. We're having a lot of discussions about why she prefers a particular myth's interpretation and why she wants to add in or leave out something from another version. Revisiting topics we've covered before is so important. Because she already has familiarity with the content, she's excited to see it again. I can give her opportunity to dive deeper than she might with a new topic, and I can guide her to make more connections that she could if everything was brand new. She is working on both picking out the important details to summarize the stories, and also then adding in her own thoughts, stylistic writing techniques and text decorations per the IEW curriculum. My oldest finished reading Animal Farm a few weeks ago. We used Fishtank Learning's 8th grade unit for this novel study. The whole unit is about 30 lessons long, with 10 lessons on a biography of Stalin (which I asked her to read, but we didn't do the lessons), then about 10 lessons on the Animal Farm novel itself, and then about 10 more on the movie.

She had previously studied the Cold War, so I just asked her to read the Stalin biography. As we worked through the novel study lessons, we went back and referenced the biography several times to find similarities between real world events and events in the book. We found the free version of the Fishtank lessons to be thorough, and great discussion starting points. I asked her to answer the reading comprehension style questions as she read the book. Each lesson had a series of questions that we discussed together, and there was one "main" question per lesson that I generally asked her to provide the written response to, supported with evidence from the text.

She got a great understanding of the book with these lessons. We did not complete the lessons about the movie, but we did just take the time to watch it, and discussed both similarities and differences to the book as we watched.

IMAGINARY CITY - Week 5

This week we looked at the art and architecture of several ancient cities. We connected how the two can be related, and how they can related to a value held by a culture.

For example, we looked at examples of a stone calendar from the Maya, and also the main pyramid at Chichen Itza that also acts as a calendar by the shadows it casts on the spring and fall equinox. We can connect that to a culture that values learning and timekeeping.

We also looked at the death mask of Tutankhamen and the pyramids of Giza from Ancient Egypt. We talked about the Egyptians being a culture that valued honoring their dead and preparing the dead for the afterlife.

After looking at and discussing examples for a few more cultures, I asked the kids to come up a with a value that is important to their imaginary ancient city. Once the value was defined, they moved on to create sketches of an art piece and a building that reflect the value or provide a space to practice the value.

My Imaginary Island class has been hard at work sculpting their islands. They began by tracing the small sketches of their islands to tape underneath plastic tubs. Then, they used their island outlines and their previously painted physical maps to help them shape a 3-D model of their 2-D plans. It was fun to see the flat images come to life and hear the different details the kids had planned.

Using a guide list of mountain heights, they also picked a height for the highest point of their islands. Next time we meet they'll use their models to create elevation maps of their islands!

We finished up our space race unit last week with a couple of final low key activities. FIrst, we used jello pudding and powdered coconut milk to make astronaut pudding in a bag while we watched Apollo 13. The movie was a big hit - the pudding less so!

We also spent the day at the creek with friends, and did a simple straw rocket stabilization lab before we played. I found this lab free on TpT. The kids all made a closed tube to fit over a straw and ran some test trials to see how it flew. They then added stabilizing fins one at a time and repeated their trials. They averaged and graphed their data.

This week the kids and I discussed some how some ancient cities dealt with necessary resources - water and garbage. We talked about how hunter-gather groups didn't really need to worry about garbage, and then how some specific ancient cities provided water to their residents and got rid of trash.

The kids then spent the rest of the time building a shaduf. I found two short video clips of shaduf models to show the kids and then they went off to design their own.

@pepperandpine recently posted a video of a beautiful shaduf model that she made with her daughter. We didn't build anything nearly as impressive, but my kids and I did watch her video later in the day and were suitably impressed!
