$Reintroducing Fractions My little is just not feeling math work at the moment. She is absolutely having a language explosion and has started writing multi-page stories in one sitting - and continuing those stories over multiple days, so it all makes sense...but still. So, we're revisiting some math threads that we haven't worked on in a while. I'll try a few things out and see what seems interesting. I started by reintroducing fraction classification: proper fraction, improper fraction, unit fraction and mixed number. We played with my fraction circles, remembering vocabulary like numerator and denominator. After we worked together, she looked at a few fraction cards from @modernmontessoriguide, but the best part happened a couple of days later when she sat down with the cards, fraction pieces and her notebook and used her notes page as reference to work through some more cards. We'll see what happens next... My fraction circles are a DIY. You can find the Cricut cut file for sale in my stores. The kids are all in on our Colonial America unit study - I think we all missed having a unifying topic for the last few weeks.

We've read through a couple of the CKLA Amplify lessons, watched a History channel documentary (In Search of Roanoke) and today we examined some primary and secondary source evidence to decide what we think happened to the Roanoke settlers. We looked at maps, journal entries, reports, and even a slice of tree trunk to determine if the settlers died of starvation, were attacked by the Spanish, moved to a new settlement, or assimilated with a local Native American group. The kids analyzed the evidence and decided for themselves. One thought that drought and lack of food forced them to move to a new location, while the other thought that assimilating with a local native group was most likely. Lots of fun!

The kids' quilting projects are coming along too! I think they've both cut all their pieces and started sewing today. Both kids worked hard to pin and re-pin their pieces accurately.

We started our first introductory read-aloud from the CKLA unit today - and that's as far as we got ;)

However - do you remember those weird cardboard pieces I cut with my Cricut a couple of weeks ago? They were quilting templates, so that the kids could cut squares and triangles and have the stitching guides drawn on the fabric. As I predicted, it was the first work off the shelf for my oldest kid today...and my little one very calmly and patiently selected one of the new books to read and had her own lesson a bit later in the morning. They've each chosen a design for their quilt square and selected some fabric and done a little cutting :)

I've been a bit quiet around here lately - we've been busy working and playing, and I can't keep up :)

My little one has been busy writing a poetry book all about bunnies! She finished her first book and immediately announced plans for volumes 2 (about cats) and 3 (about her baby doll). I wanted to create a resource that she could use independently now that she's been introduced to several poetry styles, so I created a series of simple poetry definitions, examples, and frames for her use.

This file comes in two forms – a packet version to be printed and used as poetry styles are introduced, and the same information in a flip book version. The flip book can be used for reference – perfect for lower elementary aged students who want to create many different poetry books.

Poetry styles included:
– Diamante
– Haiku
– Alliteration
– Cinquain
– Limerick
– Simile
– Acrostic
– Clerihew

I've been a bit quiet around here lately - we've been busy working and playing, and I can't keep up :)

My little one has been busy writing a poetry book all about bunnies! She finished her first book and immediately announced plans for volumes 2 (about cats) and 3 (about her baby doll). I wanted to create a resource that she could use independently now that she's been introduced to several poetry styles, so I created a series of simple poetry definitions, examples, and frames for her use.

This file comes in two forms – a packet version to be printed and used as poetry styles are introduced, and the same information in a flip book version. The flip book can be used for reference – perfect for lower elementary aged students who want to create many different poetry books.

I noticed that my little needed a multiplication by 10 review lesson. I gave her a choice of working with the stamp game or golden mat - and she chose the golden mat. She's got all her "times table" multiplication by 10 facts down, but seems to be getting confused when working with large numbers.

We started with a concrete review, taking the 5 bar 10 times, and moving each group of 10 over to the next place value to get 50. We did this again in the tens column, laying out the bead bars, and exchanging groups of 10 until we had 500.

We then moved on to multiplying a 3 digit number by 10. The first time we did this she laid out 10 of each bead bar, we counted up and moved over a place value. We then multiplied by 10 several more times, but she didn't need to lay out the bars anymore - we just talked through the process.

With every individual step, we wrote out the equation and noted the answer with any added zeros in red.

Next we laid out all the written equation tickets and compared them, talking about what happened each time we multiplied by 10. Finally, the discussion turned to considering what happens when we multiply by 100, or 1,000, or 10,000. She was able to work through another series of equations, multiplying different numbers by different powers of 10.

It's never a bad idea to go back and review if you see a need. She needed a refresher and we covered a TON of material. If she was getting this information for the first time this would be split into quite a few different lessons, but because I knew she was already familiar with all this, albeit a bit confused, we moved very quickly.

Timing is everything...

I've been watch my little one, waiting, and biding my time. For her, this has seemed to be the year of math facts. She's done so much work memorizing addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts and I've been waiting and waiting to introduce Table A to her. Finally, the timing felt right.

Tables A & B are used to reinforce mastery of multiplication facts and patterns in multiplication. Table C is used to list factors of numbers, make observations about prime numbers and other relationships.

Table A lists all possible multiplication products from 2-50. Table B lists all possible equations from 51-100.

This morning just felt like a good time. I introduced Table A to her and observed while she filled in the multiplications by 2. She said she was going to the 10's and 5's right away. I suggested maybe she do one more, since the others would be quick, and noted that some of the columns were longer than others. She said she'd do the 9's too, and I said that was fine, and that I hoped she'd find some more time to work on it the rest of the week and left her to it.

Maybe 10 or 15 minutes later she'd finished the whole table!

Table B will be waiting tomorrow! :)

Have you used TeachEngineering.org?

With our buddies, we've been having fun for the last month or so trying to work our way out of the Amazon after a plane crash! So far we've had to use our geography skills to work out our exact location and pick a destination, decide what we can scavenge and carry from the supplies on the plane, and build shelters that can withstand daily transportation.

This time we split into pairs and the kids were asked to research plants/animals in the Amazon rainforest that can be used for food. The lesson plans lead the kids through some questions to research. I had some books from the library and the kids chose to make posters and do quick presentations to each other.

The kids drew lots to see who would work together. My kids ended up working together - much to their chagrin, but as it turned out they had a good time working together, added some inside jokes to their poster and spoke well to their friends.

We've got a couple more activities to do in this lesson sequence, I hope we make it out of the jungle at the end!

Have you used TeachEngineering.org?

With our buddies, we've been having fun for the last month or so trying to work our way out of the Amazon after a plane crash! So far we've had to use our geography skills to work out our exact location and pick a destination, decide what we can scavenge and carry from the supplies on the plane, and build shelters that can withstand daily transportation.

This time we split into pairs and the kids were asked to research plants/animals in the Amazon rainforest that can be used for food. The lesson plans lead the kids through some questions to research. I had some books from the library and the kids chose to make posters and do quick presentations to each other.

The kids drew lots to see who would work together. My kids ended up working together - much to their chagrin, but as it turned out they had a good time working together, added some inside jokes to their poster and spoke well to their friends.

We've got a couple more activities to do in this lesson sequence, I hope we make it out of the jungle at the end!
