IMAGINARY ISLAND - Prior Knowledge

The third experiment in the Work of Air introduction introduces students to the idea that cold air rushes into take the space left by warm air that rises. It is typically demonstrated by making chimney out of a toilet tube (cutting a "fireplace" out of the bottom of the tube), placing a tea light inside, and a burning stick of incense just outside. The hot air above the tea light rises, and the incense smoke rushes in to take up the space.

We repeated a new version of this experiment a couple of months ago. This was a lab from my eldest's CPO Earth Science textbook. In this lab we had a box with two chimneys. We placed a lit tea light under one chimney and felt the heat rising out of the chimney. We then placed lit incense under the other chimney and observed the incense smoke rising out of it's chimney.

Next we covered the chimney above the incense with a square of cardboard. We observed the incense smoke rising into it's chimney, falling back down, and rushing over to rise out of the chimney over the candle! You can't see it in the photos, but we could easily see the convection pattern made by the incense smoke.

In the case of the Montessori lessons, this is related to wind convection cells and and land/sea breezes at a later time, after more experiments. In the case of my elder daughter's science textbook, this experiment was immediately related to those concepts.

My box/chimney hack is a plastic spinach box with lid. I cut hold the same size as the top of two plastic cups, then cut the bottoms off of the cups and hot glued them upside down over the holes in the lid. Worked perfectly!

IMAGINARY ISLAND - Prior Knowledge

The second experiment in the Work of Air series shows children that hot air rises. This is a true showstopper experiment. It's so much fun and we're repeated it so many times because it's so easy, and just so cool.

The genius is that each lesson gives one little nugget of knowledge and every piece builds and builds. The kids have such vivid memorable experiences to refer back to.

Once again, I believe this particular experiment execution was done with a video lesson and supplies from @montessorilaboratory @montessori_mandie has a great set of Work of Air videos on YouTube that I probably also watched around the time we first did these experiments.

IMAGINARY ISLAND - Prior Knowledge

Over the last two weeks, we've kind of blasted through factors affecting weather and climate. I'd like to take a few days to share some of the prior knowledge my kids have that allowed us to do this. I think it's important to emphasize that a lot of preparation has gone into this Imaginary Island year long project. Both my 6th and 3rd grader have a good background in many of the Montessori lessons leading to this point.

First of all, they have experience with the Work of Air experiments. My kids have done these experiments multiple times over the last 3+ years. They are so simple, but so demonstrative and effective. On YouTube, Montessori Mandie has a great video demonstrating these three introductory experiments.

I found a couple of videos from May 2022. I think we were using @montessorilaboratory at the time. The kids had experienced the lessons with probably a year or 18 months before, but were able to use Montessori Laboratory to repeat them independently. This first experiment demonstrates that air takes up space. An important foundation for all the follows.

IMAGINARY ISLAND - Week 13

Today we finished reviewing ocean currents, one of the elements that determines a climate of a location.

The kids then had two blank world maps. Looking back at their painted islands and the scales of the island and world maps, they plotted their island on each of the world maps.

Then, the kids pulled out the ocean current and wind pattern maps they'd made, plus some more detailed current and wind maps for reference. On one map they drew in the wind patterns that affect their island, and wrote a sentence describing how that wind pattern might alter the temperature of the island. On the other they drew in an labeled ocean currents affecting their island, and wrote a sentence detailing that.

Research on similar locations coming up next!

I haven't posted much about some of the curriculum we've incorporated this year. One of our biggest changes has been implementing IEW for both girls.

For the past few weeks my little has been reading, analyzing, and re-writing simple myths and fables. This week she has been asked to take the plot of a story she knows, and change it - make the story her own. She had no trouble picking a story completely unrelated to IEW, told me the plot, and asked me to take notes while she changed the details to fit her new idea. I took some basic notes - the words you see circled are "banned words" - words IEW asks her to reconsider.

Most IEW lessons provide a lot of scaffolding, asking the kids to choose interesting words and write sentences in particular patterns so that when the kids write their first draft they already have a good amount if ideas to pull from. This lesson is the first that did not provide that scaffolding. It's also the first week I just gave her the rough draft grading checklist and told her try and add all the required elements herself, rather than talking through it together.

In the picture, she's on her second page of writing. In these three lines she's included so many techniques! She has an -ly sentence opener, an appositive, an -ly adjective, and a strong verb. All requirements on her checklist. She was so confident as she worked, providing commentary as she added elements and discussing word choices with me.

She's on about week 10 of the curriculum and I've been sold on it since about week 2. I can see that probably after this week she'll start to take these techniques and naturally start to apply them outside of the curriculum as she writes in other content areas.

We have done a lot of Montessori style writing lessons, and Writing Revolution work, but she just never fell in to a consisted pattern of writing. IEW has provided so much consistency for her. She's always had really strong reading comprehension, and this is really giving her tools to be able to express her understanding.

My kids are getting really interested in their islands :) They've seen me planning the next couple of weeks of lessons and want in - so I suggested they might go back and use the island guide they used for research back in weeks 6 & 7 as a guide to record that information about their own islands.

My oldest wrote hers and moved on to taking notes for the future. My little one asked that I write out the questions for her so that she could answer them. ❤

You can grab my research guide (which we haven't used in its entirety yet) on my website or TpT store.

IMAGINARY ISLAND - Week 12

Review week! Last week we reviewed A LOT of the Montessori elementary physical geography curriculum.

Using the impressionistic charts and a couple of atlases we remembered some of the experiments we'd done in the past - showing that air takes up space, that hot air rises, and that cool air moves into take its place. This reminded us of convection cell experiments we did last year with hot and cold water. We talked through a lot of the principles of the Work of Air, Work of Water, and reviewed Land and Sea breeze work with sorting sheets from @themodernmotessoriguide. We didn't quite finish reviewing the Work of Wind, and will start with that next time.

I also read aloud the first part of World Book's Climate and Biomes. The book describes the five main factors that determine a location's climate:
1. distance from equator (latitude)
2. elevation
3. topography
4. water/ocean currents
5. wind

The kids have already determined 1-2. I think #3 will become clear as we finish talking about 4 & 5 next week. They will then be able to determine their island's climate.

We are still having so much fun with this book! The kids have made breakfast every weekend for about the past 6 weeks, and they've been making lunches too.

Yesterday they made sushi! I was out in the garage for most of the process and only helped with a little verbal troubleshooting. They decided that cutting the seaweed into strips and rolling each piece of sushi individually worked best for them, and you know, it all worked out. They forgot to start early enough to cook one of the components, but were happy to sub tofu instead. I think they did really well - I've never made sushi before and this all held together and tasted great. @bushelandpeckbooks
