This week my Mathematical Art class finished our Ancient Andean inspired quilt/stamping projects.

A few kids began the class wanting to make a second set of stamps so we really had a good number of sets for the kids to choose from, and then throughout the rest of class everyone was passing their sets back and forth. From the outset I had presented the project as a collaborative effort (everyone would make their own images, but the stamp sets we created would be shared), and I was lovely to see the kids so happy to share and discuss their different stamp sets. We had a couple of kids who made sets of three stamps, and those were very popular!

Last week I released my Imaginary Island Curriculum. Let's take a look inside!

You can purchase this curriculum or find a sample download file by visiting my website (www.startlitday.com) and heading to the Imaginary Island Curriculum product page.

1. Four files are included in your download: The Imaginary Island Student Text, the Imaginary Island Instructor's Guide, the Imaginary Island Metric Supplements, and the Imaginary Island Printable Posters file.

2. The Imaginary Island Student Text is written directly to the student. This provides a choice - students can read the text, or the information can be interpreted and presented by an adult - this can depend on your student or setting.

3. The Imaginary Island Student Text features a clean, uncluttered layout, color photos, maps, and diagrams.

4. The Imaginary Island Student Text features information recording pages, project planning guides, and more to help students create and complete their own projects. Periodic "Your Island So Far" pages entice students to create back story for their islands and consolidate knowledge. They can be used a a jumping off point for presentations, posters, writing assignments, and more.

5. The Imaginary Island Printable Posters file contains larger versions of the images found in the Imaginary Island Student Text. These can be printed, examined on screen, or projected.

6. The Imaginary Island Curriculum is written in US Customary (Imperial) units. The Imaginary Island Metric Supplements provides replacement pages for the lessons that feature measurement units.

7. What will your students create? Topographic maps, food webs, myths, biome maps...and much, much more.

Today my Mathematical Art class created tocapu patterns. Never heard of them? They are square-based geometric designs dating back to pre-Inca Andean civilizations. Just like quipu, there is speculation that these designs may convey language, but at the moment no one really knows.

Since it's almost the end of the semester, this is a collaborative project for my class. After some history I distributed sample designs. We used rulers to measure and divide up post-it notes and copy or create similar geometric designs. After creating a few of these we stuck the post-it notes to sticky back craft foam and used the post-it as a template to cut corresponding foam shapes.

The foam shape were stuck on multiple cardboard squares - each square representing one intended color in the final design - I think this is clearer in the photos! Next week we'll each make one more design and then share them to use as stamps with ink pads to create art inspired by The Royal Inca Tunic (pic included).

Today my Mathematical Art class created tocapu patterns. Never heard of them? They are square-based geometric designs dating back to pre-Inca Andean civilizations. Just like quipu, there is speculation that these designs may convey language, but at the moment no one really knows.

Since it's almost the end of the semester, this is a collaborative project for my class. After some history I distributed sample designs. We used rulers to measure and divide up post-it notes and copy or create similar geometric designs. After creating a few of these we stuck the post-it notes to sticky back craft foam and used the post-it as a template to cut corresponding foam shapes.

The foam shape were stuck on multiple cardboard squares - each square representing one intended color in the final design - I think this is clearer in the photos! Next week we'll each make one more design and then share them to use as stamps with ink pads to create art inspired by The Royal Inca Tunic (pic included).

We finished our Moroccan tile inspired art works and they look amazing! I had a few different mediums for the kids to use. Most chose oil pastels for a really vibrant look, but a couple used chalk and I think water color pencils too.

After coloring, the kids removed the tape we'd used to mask the paper. All but one chose to paint over the masked lines in gold paint, and I love both the sparkly gold pop, and the white borders on the all pale blue design.

My Mathematical Art class is aimed at older elementary and middle school students. While I teach and use geometric vocabulary, the class is also an art class and I want to emphasize that we can create all this artwork with just a ruler and compass.

I've been creating reference sheets for my Mathematical Art students - most sheets I found were aimed at high school geometry students and just included too much information (angles names, rays names, measurements, etc.).

Would these sheets be useful to others if I put them up in my store? There's a couple more beyond the ones pictured here, and maybe there'll be one or two more before the end of the semester.

Guess I never shared this one - I chose Rose Windows as another of our Math Art: Around the World projects. After learning a little about the history, and seeing some examples of cathedral windows throughout Europe we got to work.

In this lesson the skill taught was bisecting an angle - and in dividing our circles into 12 divisions, we got plenty of practice. Everyone practiced angle bisecting, but I did have some pre-printed templates for kids who struggled with accuracy.

Once we got our circles drawn and divided, we lay transparencies (think overhead projector!!) over the top and used black glue as our "stone work." When the glue had dried we used colored sharpies to color in the designs. Beautiful!!
