I haven't posted much about the third class I'm teaching in our homeschool community - I'm calling it Citizens of the World.

I'm actually super excited about it because this isn't a unit study or an interpretation of something, but something I completely designed from scratch.

Over about 7 weeks, students will become an expert on one country (which they picked). We're about 5 weeks in, and so far they've examined the physical geography, the climate, the population distributions and the economy/natural resources of their country.

They've made a base map on paper, and are creating overlay maps on tracing paper so they can see that different maps give different information, but that ill that information is related.

Last week they were given some information about the natural resources, imports and exports or their country - and researched a few more. We then held a "Global Trade Summit" where they had 10 trading points, and had to figure out the most efficient countries to trade with to get everything their country needs - it was great fun!

While they may not know this, all these topics weave together within a Montessori style framework - showing that everything is related. Next up are the fundamental human needs of their country. After that our course pivots...I'll explain more later :)

Have you seen this pop up in your homeschool groups?

Civic Quest is a FREE game from the National Constitution Center. It is a learning/escape room style game that is designed to get kids thinking about a discussing the people and issues that led up to the US War for Independence. You can sign up for the wait list here: https://constitutioncenter.org/civic-quest

Our game arrived last week, my little and I played over the weekend. It is a beautiful game, beautifully put together, packaged, included primary source type documents, and has lots of cute gimmicks to keep you playing. Since it's an escape room style game, I can't see us playing it again, but we certainly pass on to friends so that they can play too.

We enjoyed it, it got us talking about some of the famous names and issues involved, and it really didn't state any hard political position, but left open a lot of space for discussion.

If you have other people to share the game with, it's worth seeing if you can get a copy.

The best lessons are the ones where you forget to do any recording, right?

I generally don't take photos during my classes, but I have been trying to remember to take set up photos!

I gave the Second Great Lesson/Timeline of Life lesson to my Cosmic Stories class last week. I have the Rhyme and Reason Academy timeline (what is her handle? I couldn't find it!) and I used quite a lot of pieces from her Second Great Lesson script (it's non YouTube), which she rewrote using information from Big Picture Science/Priscilla Spears @bigpicturescience

The kids enjoyed my additions of my felt prokaryote, and my fossilized Trixie the trilobite. We spent some time afterwards following the different lines and picking out organisms that they recognized.

Follow up work options included books (always), coloring pages from fossilicious.com, along with my fossilicious fossils and magnifying glasses, their fact books and research guides.

I also had "fossil making" set up - the kids could press a shell into clay, then mix and pour on plaster of Paris to make an impression fossil.

They would like bacteria/archaea to be our next follow up lesson...any fun craft follow up ideas for me?

My goodness, almost half my my math art class was out again this week too! Oh well. Those that were there got their "exploding bugs" finished, and don't they look amazing! Some chose to use their painted backgrounds, and some decided that a blank piece of cardstock pop more.

Lots of practical math packed into this project - and plenty of practical skills in general. I see a couple of kids in the class that need opportunities for more ruler, scissor, and fine motor work and the cutting and tiny triangle gluing was a challenge for them.

On the math side, the few weeks we spent on this project included discussions about symmetry, triangle classification, measurement and ruler work.

Next, we'll start on compass work :)

Next, we'll start on compass work :) ___________________________________ #homeschool #montessori #diymontessori #homeschoolmontessori #montessoriathome #montessorihomeschooler #homeschooler #unitstudies #homeschoolunitstudies #math #montessorimath #montessorihomeschool #montessorimaths #geometry #geometrylessons #mathinnature #mathart #inspiredbynature #mathnatureart

Math Art was a quick sort of fill in project this week - last week half of the kids present didn't finish their painting projects, and two were on vacation - and we have more work to do with the painted papers!

So, I needed a fill in project in order to give most of the kids painting time. Since we talked about and classified triangles, so I wanted to follow on from that. I thought a quick collage project might be fun. The kids could draw triangles with a ruler, or use my detective adjective triangles as templates. Everyone had a table of triangles to compare their cut triangles to, and a variety of papers made the visual more fun.

As kids finished painting they joined in on this project. The timing meant that not everyone managed to finish the collage - but they did all finish their painting! We can complete our "exploding bugs" next week!

Today one of my students walked into my Cosmic Stories class and immediately said, "ooohh...volcanoes!"

I told the Clock of Eras story. Before I started I asked what the kids remembered from last week's Story of the Earth tale. We talked about what time the kids get up, and what time they go to bed, and then I used those times to compare the 12 hours on the Clock of Eras to their days.

The kids had great comments and questions as we worked around the clock. They loved my bacteria and my trilobite and the pictures.

I think (?) I made the worksheet you see., but probably not the clock graphic it contains I asked my older students to fill it out with a few words or an images or two from each era/eon.

I had some Clock of Era sorting cards from @@montessorikiwi available, the books from Fossilicious.com, and my display available along with paper, books, and coloring/writing materials.

And, of course, I had volcanoes! Baking soda and vinegar volcanoes never get old! Not pictured are the instruction cards I placed out for the kids so that they could complete this activity independently.

This was a really fun lesson, the kids all remembered so much from the last few stories, and it was a great way to see all this new knowledge come together before we move on to the Second Great Lesson.

As a follow up to my last homeschool co-op post:

We are also super lucky to have a homeschool community here that offers classes for our kids to take that can be paid for either out of pocket or with charter school funds. My kids started attending once a week around 2022 or 2023 and have had the opportunity to take classes including: ceramics, public speaking, circus skills, creative writing, film & video, yearbook, math games, middle school science and more.

This year, my youngest takes 5 classes across 2 days, and this is my third year teaching through the organization. I've taught Math/Geometry Art every semester, a year of Imaginary Island, a Game Design class, a Spy Skills class, and this year I am teaching a Geography based classes and a Cosmic stories class along with Math Art.

It is a thriving community, growing each year. I hear there are over 200 kids participating this semester! Running three days a week there are between 12-30 classes running depending on the day - plenty to choose from! The site provides lunch supervision for the kids to hang out, and organizes Halloween events, craft fairs, end of semester performances and graduation experiences. Amazingly, our area can support three sister sites that are smaller, and run only 1 or two days per week. We certainly have plenty of homeschoolers to run into in our area and for us it has been a great place for the kids to make friends, explore new subjects, and get to work and collaborate with other kids.

Photos are from my classes.
